Euthanasia: An Informative Essay Essay
The first person to be legally voluntarily euthanised in Australia was Bob Dent in the Northern Territory, in the year of 1996. This controversial issue has raised many dilemmas throughout society, and so far it seems there is no clear solution. The implications of euthanasia will be discussed herein. Defining the issue and exploring both sides of the controversy has proven to be a difficult task. The word ââ¬Ëeuthanasiaââ¬â¢ comes from the Greek words ââ¬Ëeuââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëthanatosââ¬â¢, together translating as ââ¬Ëgood deathââ¬â¢. The Oxford Concise Medical Dictionary defines euthanasia as the ââ¬Ëact of taking life to relieve sufferingââ¬â¢. In practice euthanasia proves to be far more complex, as it comes in a variety of forms. Passive euthanasia is the deliberate withdrawal of treatment and nourishment for the terminally ill patient. Active euthanasia is on the authority or for the best interests of the patient who perhaps is unable to speak for him or herself. For example, a hospital could decide when to take someone off a life support machine. Voluntary euthanasia is when the patient makes a request to have their life terminated, through the administration of a drug or other means. There is also involuntary euthanasia, which is when a life is taken away without and individualââ¬â¢s consent and against their will and is one of the many causes for the sensitivity and distress surrounding this matter. Euthanasia is also known ââ¬Ëmercy killingââ¬â¢ (Bachman 1999) or ââ¬Ëphysician assisted-suicideââ¬â¢. The word ââ¬Ëmercyââ¬â¢ means ââ¬Ëcompassionââ¬â¢, yet combined with the term ââ¬Ëkillingââ¬â¢ becomes a juxtaposition of contrasting meanings. Such terms as these are very strong in the image they reflect, and perhaps the frequent use of them is what makes euthanasia even harder to comprehend and to be accepted as a legitimate practice. Where do you start or stop euthanasia? The Voluntary Euthanasia Society wants the law to allow people ââ¬Å"with a severe illness from which there is no relief knownâ⬠to be put to death. Those in favour of euthanasia feel that terminally ill patients should not have to endure the slow process their bodiesââ¬â¢ deteriorating, being incontinent, pain-racked and totally dependant on life-supporting machines. As such patients lose control over bodilyà functions; either by being in a comatose state or vegetative state, dignity is lost also as with the ability to control events. Requests for euthanasia are not always because the patient is giving up in the face of suffering, but that they are positively asserting their desire to control events. Modern medicine has brought about surgery, immunisation and anti-bodies. Inadvertently these have all increased life expectancy in general in comparison to societyââ¬â¢s predecessors. This means that the possibilities made available by the modern world should not be completely disregarded. Too often advances in palliative care are protracted, painful and undignified. This paper has examined the human dilemma, which arises when technological advances in end-of-life medicine conflict with traditional sanctity-of-life values. Society places high value on personal autonomy. To conclude, allowing autonomy for the terminally ill, within legal bounds, would result in fewer ethical contradictions and greater preservation of dignity.

Different Types of Resistors
Different Types of Resistors Electrical engineering involves the study and development of different electrical technologies, which are used for different purposes. One device that is very common in engineering and in electrical engineering is a resistor. A resistor is nothing but a special electrical component that helps in the induction of electrical resistance in a given electrical circuit. The resistors can be made up of different elements and different materials and it depends on the applied voltage and the applied current. No electric circuit can be complete without the use of resistors in them. The specifications of the resistors however depend on the conduction of the current. We would talk about some of the commonly used resistors. Carbon composition resistors are among the most commonly used resistors, which usually consist of a special cylindrical resistive element. The resistive element is usually made up of wire leads or metal end caps that help in providing resistance to the flow of current. These resistors are used only in expensive equipments and circuits because these are quite costly as compared to other resistors. When the carbon disks are stacked on top of one another in the resistor system, it is known as carbon pile system. Other than carbon pile system, another carbon resistor that is used is carbon film resistor, wherein carbon films of different shapes and sizes are used depending on the type of resistor and the circuit it is being used in.Thick and thin film resistors are also special types of resistors used commonly. As the name suggests, thick and thin film resistors have different widths and thicknesses and depending on their thicknesses they are given the respective titles. The thin film resistors usually exhibit higher tolerance and better performance as compared to the thick film ones and that is why they are even costlier. Metal film resistors can also be used after being coated with nickel chromium. These resistors are shown to dem onstrate extremely high noise characteristics and also non-linearity. Resistors can also be wirewound where metal wires are wounded over the resistor system. The wounding of the wires provides a hindrance to the flow of current, thus leading to resistance. Grid resistor is a special form of resistor which demonstrates the connection of a large convection-cooled lattice of stamped metal alloy strips in different rows between the given electrodes. Most of these resistors are fixed resistors providing a fixed amount of resistance. But due to the changing needs, engineers have also developed special variables resistors wherein the resistance can be varied depending on the applied current and voltage. The resistance is always directly proportional to the overall voltage and inversely proportional to the applied current. Thus, all of these resistors are equally effective and advantageous. Terrorism In V For Vendetta Essay
Terrorism In V For Vendetta Essay Terrorism In V For Vendetta Essay Terrorism in V for Vendetta Modern-day terrorism presents a global threat to peace. With the terrorist attacks in 2001 and various attacks in Europe, a clear stereotype of what a terrorist is has emerged. When I think of terrorists, I imagine Muslim extremists with homemade bombs. The graphic novel V for Vendetta examines terrorism and what is traditionally referenced when one thinks of terrorism. V for Vendetta brings up some questions about what is the definition of a terrorist and how does the definition change based on people's different perspectives. From the perspective of the people, the Norsefire government is considered a terrorist group but because the people elected the government they are terrorists by association. When identifying a terrorist certain variables should be considered, such as the points of view of the labeler and the sources of the definition of the word 'terrorist.' In labeling a group or person as terrorist, oneââ¬â¢s definition of terrorism should be considered. Often times it is the government's job to set the definition of terrorism because governments are often targeted by terrorist groups. Another aspect to consider is the perspective of the labeler. When the people are actively involved in government, the government's perspective on who is a terrorist will be similar with the people's perspective. In the graphic novel V for Vendetta the people could not be less involved in their government. Therefore, later in the novel the government and the people have different perspectives about who is a terrorist. For instance, Norsefire considers the individual codenamed ââ¬Å"Vâ⬠a terrorist for various bombings and killings. Through the governmentââ¬â¢s influence by defining Vââ¬â¢s acts as terrorism, the people also considered V a terrorist at first. Later in the novel, the people regard their government as a terrorist organization for the Larkhill experiments where they experimented on the minorities and homosexuals until death. The general mistreatment of the people is another factor that lead to such a distaste for Norsefire. In the novel V for Vendetta the controlling government, Norsefire, takes away the publicââ¬â¢s freedoms and has them constantly under surveillance. Because of these injustices against the people, one could consider Norsefire to be a terrorist organization. Through claims of betterment the government takes away freedoms, such as privacy, without the people ever questioning or realizing the loss of these rights. For example, there are cameras that claim to be for protection. A camera cannot protect anyone but it can take away the right to privacy. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the Brixton and Streatham areas are quarantine zones as of today. It is suggested that these areas be avoided for reasons of health and safety.â⬠(p.9). This is another example of loss of rights without question. With a g overnment as controlling as Norsefire, it is not hard to believe that a government could be a terrorist group. With Norsefire being a people elected government, the people are to blame for their governmentââ¬â¢s actions. The people in V for Vendetta are terrorists to themselves or at the very least accomplices to terrorists. By becoming content

Theology Michealangeloââ¬â¢s gigantic marble David, which he created between 1501 and 1504 after returning to Florence, brought him to his high point of his career. David was illustrated as a lithe nude youth, muscular and alert, looking off into the distance as if sizing up the enemy Goliath, whom he has not yet encountered. The fiery intensity of Davidââ¬â¢s facial expression is called terribilita, a feature characteristic of many of Michealangeloââ¬â¢s figures and his own personailty. This piece of art work became the symbol of Florence and originally was placed in the Piazza della Signoria in front of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Florentine town hall. How should one live Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
How should one live - Essay Example 2). Most of us people believe that a life devoid of sorrow or hardships is essentially the one that is desirable. Yet another school of thought holds that sorrow and happiness are the two sides of the same coin, and that hardships are an invincible component of human life. According to them, the true essence of life lies in the success in overcoming the difficulties and challenges posed by life. A balanced approach towards life is instrumental in bringing about a transformation of the mind and the soul. It is true that happiness and peace areà the two major issues in human existence. But one can never get everything he/she wants because it is practically impossible. ââ¬Å"The good for man is an activity of the soul in accordance with virtue, or if there are more kinds of virtue than one, in accordance with the best and most perfect kind.â⬠(Barnes, 2004, p. 16). One can learn to control his/her mind and live a restrained and satisfied life with a whole new viewpoint. Restraint and self-control helps to purify the mind. It cleanses the thought process of negative feelings like greed, hatred and jealousy that keep us enslaved in emotional bondage. It brings the mind to a state of tranquility and awareness and leads the soul to a state of concentration and insight. Another way of leading a meaningful life is to learn to love one self. It is a matter of great regret that most of us spend our entire life cursing ourselves for what we are and pondering over what we could or should have been. We feel ashamed and embarrassed to accept what we are and keep comparing ourselves with others. Instead of self-reproach one should rather love oneself and oneââ¬â¢s world. One should realize that pain and comfort are two facets of the same life. So if we are so eager to gain comfort, we should also not hesitate in facing pain. The idea that has to be reinforced is that one should be equally receptive to the
